IFS's aeroacoustic vehicle wind tunnel, which will be comprehensively modernised in 2014, is one of the most modern of its kind in Europe for aerodynamic testing of passenger cars, vans and racing cars. In addition to acoustic methods, there are other extensive test possibilities available for measuring forces, pressures and speeds as well as for flow visualisation.
The aeroacoustic vehicle wind tunnel has a horizontal air duct with an open free jet measuring section (wind tunnel Göttingen type). In order to simulate the inflow conditions of a vehicle rolling on the road as realistically as possible, road travel is simulated with rotating wheels and moving ground in the vehicle wind tunnel. This is done with the aid of a 5-belt system consisting of a central treadmill and four wheel turning devices in combination with boundary layer conditioning.
